The Boston Red Sox’ talks with superstar Alex Bregman have finally been heating up, with rumored contract offers being revealed. Now, it seems the latest contract update has come out.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Sox have possibly raised the price again, willing to meet what the Detroit Tigers offered last offseason. If that’s true, it’ll be the biggest contract the Sox have given to a free agent in a while.
“The Boston Red Sox want Bregman and have signaled a willingness to pay him big money -- perhaps something in the range of what the Tigers offered him last spring, a six-year, $171.5 million deal,” Olney wrote.
This past season with the Sox, Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462/.821 with 28 doubles, 18 home runs, and 62 RBI in 114 games. He instantly became the leader of the team, and was mostly responsible for their bounce-back from mediocrity, along with Garrett Crochet.

Paying Bregman $28.5 million a year would be a little questionable in the later years of the contract, but the first four could well be worth it. Plus, it’s under $30 million a year, which was what Bregman was originally looking for.
Hopefully, the market for Bregman doesn’t heat up soon, and he’s left with only this offer. If that’s the case, the Sox may have room for one more free agent acquisition.
