Michigan State's pre-portal roster projection: Wide receivers

Michigan State football is gearing up for a roster overhaul, with new head coach Pat Fitzgerald needing to put together his first roster in East Lansing through the transfer portal. With the transfer portal opening on Jan. 2, and only lasting for two weeks, it will be imperative to make a strong and immediate impact.

The first step to shoring up the roster is evaluating the members of MSU's roster that will be retained, while identifying the needs to plug holes in the starting lineup.

Taking a look at the position groups on the Spartans roster, it will distinguish who the team may be pursuing when the portal opens at the turn of the new year.

After dissecting the quarterbacks and running backs, it is time to turn to the wide receiver room, that has some key variables.

Obviously, Nick Marsh is most likely moving on from the program, but it is imperative that the Spartans leave the defections to just Marsh, putting their effort on retaining Chrishon McCray, and others.

Depth Chart Projection:

WR1 - Starter: Chrishon McCray (RS SR)
- Backup: Charles Taplin (RS FR)
WR2 - Starter: Evan Boyd (RS JR)
- Backup: transfer
WR3 - Starter: Braylon Collier (RS FR)
- Backup: transfer

Outlook: The wide receiver room is sparse, making the retention of McCray massive, while needing the depth Boyd, Taplin and Collier can provide. There is no secret, though, this room needs transfers that can make immediate impacts. Luckily, WR coach Courtney Hawkins has been in this spot before, and has succeeded in his portal pursuits.

New OC Nick Sheridan will know the kind of wide receivers his offense needs, and there will be a coordinated attack to get this room to the level it needs to be via the transfer portal. Expect that depth chart to look differently in two weeks.
