Sean Payton came to the Denver Broncos not only as an offensive wizard but, importantly, also as a culture builder. With the New Orleans Saints, Payton went 152-89, had nine seasons of 10 or more wins, and, of course, won a Super Bowl in the 2009 NFL season. One of his former players, Manti Te’o, had a story that revealed how he built a culture like no other.
Speaking on NFL Network, Te’o said Payton and Mike Vrabel, head coach of the New England Patriots, may differ in their approach to preparing for the Super Bowl. Te’o spoke about how Payton brought in a Brink's truck loaded with cash. But here’s the catch: the Lombardi Trophy was inside, too. Payton’s message? Win these next couple of games in the playoffs, and this Brink's truck is yours: with everything in it.
Te’o’s point was that Payton is the type of coach who always keeps his eye on the Super Bowl, while Vrabel more or less is just appreciative of the journey it’s taken to get here. Neither approach is wrong, but perhaps it’s why, as a coach, Payton has closed the deal.
