Ruben Amorim has been fired by Manchester United, the reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic has confirmed.

In a bombshell revelation this Monday morning, Ornstein writes, “Ruben Amorim has been sacked by Manchester United.”

“Former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge on an interim basis.”

“His first game would be away at Burnley on Wednesday night with a permanent appointment likely to wait until the summer.”

Ornstein adds, “The decision has been arrived at by the club’s leadership team, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, after a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.”

Amorim’s sacking comes in the immediate aftermath of his fiery outbursts before and after the draw with Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday.

In his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese coach was in a spiky mood, refusing to answer transfer-related questions and whether the club had instructed him to adapt his tactical approach. Since his appointment as head coach last year, he has come under criticism for a perceived lack of tactical flexibility.

After the Leeds game, an animated Amorim told reporters that he joined United to become the manager rather than head coach. He also openly questioned his future, noting repeatedly that a parting of ways with the club was on the cards once his contract expired.

A subsequent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that there was rising tension between Amorim and club chief Jason Wilcox. Amorim is understood to have been left unhappy by the club’s broken transfer promises.

Ornstein further explains, “As per the terms in the deal Amorim signed to leave Sporting CP for United in November 2024, there is no clause present to enable a discounted exit meaning United will have to pay up his contract in full.”

“It was set to run until 2027 with the option of a further year.”

United are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table, level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea and just three adrift of Liverpool in fourth.
