Jets double down on defense in latest 2026 NFL mock draft

The 2025 New York Jets are atrocious on defense. Nor did changing defensive coordinators help. Head coach Aaron Glenn replaced DC Steve Wilks with interim Chris Harris, but the Jets still lost 29-6 to the New Orleans Saints in Week 16.

No, what the Jets need is an infusion of talent on the defensive side of the ball this offseason.

General manager Darren Mougey is currently equipped with two first-round selections in the 2026 NFL draft. In The Draft Network's latest first-round mock draft, the Jets take Ohio State safety Caleb Downs at No. 4 overall, and double-down on Buckeyes defenders with DT Kayden MacDonald with the 18th pick.

"The New York Jets have a ton of needs throughout their roster," The Draft Network wrote about their first pick. "With five first-round picks slated for 2026 and 2027, Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey don't have to rush the QB decision. The defense is in total shambles. They just fired DC Steve Wilks and haven't recorded an interception all season. Caleb Downs is an elite playmaker who can roam the entire field while having an instant impact on this defense."

"Trading away Quinnen Williams left a massive hole on the interior of the Jets' defensive line," TDN continued about the Kayden McDonald pick. "They're one of the worst pass-rushing teams in the NFL as a result. Kayden MacDonald has a rare combination of size, athleticism, and strength. MacDonald would free up Will McDonald IV and Jermaine Johnson II for more advantageous matchups on the edges."

Downs would be a game-changer for a struggling Jets defensive backfield. Downs is arguably the best overall prospect in the 2026 NFL draft regardless of position.

Regarding the MacDonald pick, the big-bodied interior defensive lineman could help the Jets play bully-ball in the trenches again.
