Inaki Williams slams ‘s***’ Super Cup in Saudi Arabia ahead of Barcelona clash

Inaki Williams has hit out at the decision to play the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia ahead of the start of the tournament in January.

Athletic Club are due to play Barcelona in the semi-finals, but Williams thinks it’s a bad idea to have taken the competition to the Middle East.

“For me, playing (the tournament) in Saudi Arabia is s—,” he told the media. “Taking a national competition out to another country does not make things easy for (the fans) to move and follow the games.

“When we play there, it feels like we are the away team. Above that, in the upcoming days, I am going to be a dad, and it is a big hassle to go away with my wife and son here.”

Barcelona, Athletic, Real Madrid and Atletico will jet out to Saudi Arabia for the tournament after this weekend’s latest round of La Liga fixtures.

The tournament’s been held in Saudi since 2019-20 and a contract is in place to keep it in the country until 2029.
