Lisbon Lion Jim Craig and former Celtic managing director, Fergus McCann, have both been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List.

Fergus, who successfully rescued Celtic back in 1994 and began the transformation of the club which has seen it become the dominant force in Scottish football over the past 25 years, is honoured with a CBE for his service to the economy and charity.

Having taken over Celtic over 30 years ago, as well as rebuilding the club both on and off the park, Fergus also moved to re-establish charity at the heart of Celtic, in line with the ethos and formation of the club, and that continues to this day with the fantastic work Celtic FC Foundation do in the name of Celtic to help people near and far who need it most.

Jim Craig, who has been given an OBE, was part of the most famous team in Celtic’s history, one of the 11 men who, on May 25, 1967, beat Inter Milan in Lisbon’s Estadio Nacional to win the European Cup – the first British team to do so.

He joined Celtic back in 1963, combining life as a footballer with his studies at university, where he was training to be a dentist, before becoming a full-time professional footballer in 1965.

Jim made his first-team debut in a European Cup-Winners’ Cup tie at home to Dutch side, Go Ahead Deventer in October of that year, and over the next seven years he would go on to make 239 appearances for Celtic, scoring six goals.

And his trophy haul was an impressive one, winning seven league titles, four Scottish Cups, three League Cups and, of course, the European Cup in 1967. He also gained one cap for Scotland.

After he hung up his boots, Jim continued working as a dentist, while also pursuing a successful career in the media as a commentator and pundit, and he has also written a number of Celtic books. Now an ambassador of the club, Jim continues to be a regular presence at Celtic Park on a matchday.

Congratulations to both Jim and Fergus for their respective honours.
