Down two starters and a key reserve, the Detroit Pistons initially looked out-of-sorts against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Their fortunes shifted in the second quarter, thanks to a big performance from their point guard on a two-way contract.
Daniss Jenkins delivered one of the most impressive quarters in franchise history, scoring 21 points and dishing three assists on perfect 6-for-6 shooting from 3 in the second period. His offensive outburst, coupled with a strong defensive performance by the rest of the team, turned a nine-point deficit into a 10-point lead and put them in control for good.

The Pistons defeated the Cavaliers on the road, 114-110, to improve to 26-9 overall. They were without Tobias Harris (left hip sprain), Jalen Duren (right ankle sprain) and Caris LeVert (right knee inflammation), but prevailed thanks to big contributions from the bench.

Jenkins hit four clutch free throws down the stretch and finished with 25 points and five assists. Cade Cunningham led the team with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Javonte Green added 11 points and three 3-pointers off of the bench.
Donovan Mitchell, who led all scorers with 30 points, cut an 13-point Pistons lead to four, 106-102, with under three minutes left. The Cavaliers got within two before Ausar Thompson tipped in a missed midrange jumper by Jenkins with 17.2 seconds remaining in the final period. With three seconds left, Sam Merrill hit a 3-pointer to cut it to two again, 112-110. Jenkins iced the game with two free throws on the other end.

Jenkins dazzles in historic second period
The 6-foot-3 point guard has delivered numerous heroic performances for the Pistons this season. Sunday might’ve been his most impressive yet.
Jenkins fell one point short of the franchise record for points scored in a second quarter, and did so while making all seven of his field goal attempts with six 3-pointers. His first two triples brought the Pistons within three points, 33-30, with 9:09 on the clock after the Pistons trailed by nine to close the first quarter.
As the clock ticked, Jenkins’ shot attempts became more audacious. His next 3-pointer extended an 11-2 run to bring them within one, and a heat check pull-up 3 with 1:40 until halftime extended it to 26-10 and pushed their lead to seven, 56-49.

But the two most-impressive shots were within the final 20 seconds. As the clock wound down, Jenkins danced past Mobley with a crossover dribble and then finished an off-balance right-handed floater through contact from the big man. Jenkins capped his performance with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer, racing the length of the court before pulling up in front of Garland.
According to Pistons PR, Jenkins’ 21-point quarter is the highest-scoring by a bench player in franchise history. Thanks to his scoring outburst and stout defense, the Pistons outscored the Cavaliers 47-28 in the second period and built a 10-point lead at halftime, 66-56. They held the Cavaliers to 7-for-18 shooting in the period (38.9%).
