Former Wisconsin offensive tackle signs major contract extension

Former Wisconsin offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen agreed to a major contract extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday.

The deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, is worth $51 million over three seasons, with $32.5 million guaranteed. It could reach up to $55.5 million with incentives.

Van Lanen is wrapping up his fifth overall NFL season and fourth with the Jaguars. The versatile lineman has appeared in 49 games over those four years, starting 12. Just in 2025, he's started four games at left tackle, one at left guard, one at right guard, two at right tackle and one as an extra lineman. Strong play during those opportunities has headlined Van Lanen's breakout year, cementing his standing as one of the Jaguars' top linemen.

Van Lanen previously played five seasons at Wisconsin from 2016-20. After redshirting in 2016, he appeared in 45 games over the following four seasons, starting 19. He went on to be a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers.

Following Friday's extension, it's safe to say Van Lanen has far exceeded the expectations tied to that initial draft position.

Van Lanen and the Jaguars conclude their 2025 season with a home matchup against the Tennessee Titans. The team is close to set as the AFC's No. 3-seed entering the upcoming playoffs.
