Former Texas A&M quarterback Miles O’Neill will visit Chapel Hill on Monday, another development for North Carolina in the transfer portal window.
UNC is one of two schools he plans to visit. He will visit Stanford first, then travel across the country to Chapel Hill the following day. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
He spent the past two seasons at Texas A&M, where he appeared in eight games and completed 12 of 20 passes for 171 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, mostly in mop-up duty. Last season, he completed 7 of 14 passes for 120 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Despite former Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards committing to North Carolina earlier Sunday, O’Neill still plans to visit Chapel Hill. That suggests the Tar Heels will take more than one quarterback in the portal window, in part because the quarterback position will be thin again.
UNC currently has four quarterbacks on its roster: Edwards, returning starter Gio Lopez, rising redshirt freshman Au’tori Newkirk and incoming freshman Travis Burgess. The 2026 season will be the last year of eligibility for both Edwards and Lopez, which would leave only Burgess and Newkirk on the roster.
Because a quarterback is always a hot commodity in the portal, one of those young quarterbacks could leave after next season, which could leave just one quarterback on the roster. Targeting O’Neill, who has three years of eligibility remaining, makes sense.
Familiarity at UNC

One of the main reasons UNC is targeting O’Neill is simple: Bobby Petrino, UNC’s potential offensive coordinator, recruited him when Petrino was the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M in 2023.

When O’Neill discussed why he committed to Texas A&M, he pointed to Petrino as the key factor in an interview with 247Sports during his senior year of high school.
"That's a big reason why I went there," he said during his final season of high school. "Knowing what he can do, his experience with that stuff. He's had good quarterbacks come through, Ryan Mallett and all those guys. It's good to know that he's had people like this before and I can't wait to work with him."
He was a four-star quarterback in the class of 2024. Originally from Marblehead, Mass., O’Neill played his senior season at the Hun School of Princeton where he was the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year after he completed 72.1% of his passes for 2,151 yards and 20 touchdowns.
