Former OU quarterback finds new transfer portal home

5 days ago 2

The Oklahoma Sooners have been busy over the first six days of the 2026 transfer portal cycle, and their are surely more entrances and exits coming in the final nine days of the singular portal window this year. The transfer portal officially opened on January 2nd, and it will officially close on January 16th. Players don't have to have found their new school yet by the 16th, but they do have to have their information in the portal before it closes that night.

However, one player who wasn't at OU for very long did find his new home via the portal. Quarterback Cole Gonzales arrived in Norman after transferring in from FCS Western Carolina. He spent spring ball with the Sooners, before entering the portal again to transfer to Pittsburgh for the 2025 season. After once again entering the portal, Gonzales is headed to Charlotte to play for the 49ers.

Gonzales was a star at Western Carolina, throwing for 6,682 yards, 51 touchdowns, 22 interceptions, and completing 63.6% of his passes. Oklahoma offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle brought him to Norman to provide depth in a rebuilt quarterback room, but Gonzales instead wound up at Pitt.

With the Panthers, Gonzales was the backup quarterback for the first part of the season, then the third-string QB after star freshman Mason Heintschel took over. Now, he'll arrive at Charlotte, trying to make the most of his final year of college football with the 49ers under head coach Tim Albin.
