With the transfer portal now open, players nationwide are looking for a fresh start. That list includes former Longhorn Johntay Cook, who is leaving Syracuse following a contract dispute. After a productive 2025 campaign, Cook hopes to join an offense that can maximize his skillset.
In his only season with the Orangemen, Cook hauled in 45 receptions for 549 receiving yards. He also found the endzone twice while averaging 12.2 yards a catch. That was not the only way Cook made an impact as the Texas native added 18 rushing yards to his resume. While the former five-star recruit will be changing ZIP codes, he is not in an unfamiliar position.
The DeSoto High Alum began his college career at Texas, where he stayed for two seasons. During his time as a Longhorn, Cook recorded 273 yards on 16 catches. He was able to find the end zone twice but struggled to carve out a role in the offense. As a result, Cook entered the transfer portal and joined Washington. That stint was short-lived. Less than 48 hours after Cook arrived on campus, the two parties parted ways due to legal issues that surrounded the talented wideout.

Coming out of high school, expectations were high for Cook. He was ranked as the No. 31 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. Now, Cook's focus will be to show why he was seen as one of the best players in his class.
Whoever ends up with Cook will be getting a player full of talent. In three collegiate seasons, he has recorded 822 receiving yards on 61 catches. To reach his potential, Cook must stay healthy and remain consistent. If he can do that, then a big 2026 season could be on the horizon.
As programs nationwide look for upgrades offensively, Cook will be a player to watch.
