Former Cowboys All-Pro tight end and 2026 Hall-of-Fame candidate Jason Witten is taking his coaching talents to the college level. Witten has spent the last five years as the head football coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas. While there, he took the club to a 2023 state championship, and their first undefeated season in team history.

He has now reportedly accepted the role as tight ends coach for OU and will work for head coach Brent Venables and under offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle.

He will also join former teammate Demarco Murray who has served as the team's running back coach for the past six seasons.

Witten will be replacing Joe Jon Finley, who was let go less than a week ago after five seasons in Norman. Finley served as the teams play caller in 2024 due to an in-season coaching change.

Witten retired from the NFL after the 2017 season and became the color commentator for Monday night Football. After a season away, he returned to the Cowboys for the 2019 season before playing his 17th and final year for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Witten's 1,228 receptions and 13,046 receiving yards rank second in NFL history for TE's trailing only Hall-of-Fame TE Tony Gonzalez. He holds numerous Cowboys records such as the most receiving yards (12,977) and most games played (239). He was also the 2012 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year and is a favorite to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
