Clemson’s search for its next offensive coordinator is already drifting toward familiar territory.
According to multiple reports, head coach Dabo Swinney parted ways with Garrett Riley on Monday, a move that immediately put the spotlight on how Clemson plans to reset an offense that struggled to find consistency throughout the 2025 season. Rather than casting a wide, public net, the early chatter has centered on comfort, trust, and prior success.

That’s where Chad Morris enters the picture.
Morris is well known in Clemson circles, not only for his previous stint running the Tigers’ offense but for the long-standing relationship he shares with Swinney. Their history dates back more than a decade, and that familiarity could matter as the Tigers approaches a pivotal stretch with the transfer portal opening Jan. 2. Whoever steps into the role will be expected to stabilize the roster quickly while helping reestablish an offensive identity that has gone missing.
Although Morris hasn’t called plays on a full-time basis in recent seasons, he has remained close to the game. He spent 2024 coaching at Texas State, served in analytical roles earlier in the decade, and took the 2025 season away from coaching to watch his son lead Virginia to an ACC Championship Game appearance. Even during that time, Morris stayed connected, spending time around Clemson late in the season to assist with preparation.
Morris’ original run with the Tigers remains one of the most productive offensive periods in program history. From 2011 through 2014, Clemson routinely ranked among the nation’s top scoring teams, set numerous school records, and established the foundation for its rise on the national stage.
A return now would look very different than it did a decade ago. Morris has already experienced the head coaching path, and this opportunity would be about fit and familiarity rather than ambition. For a program searching for offensive stability, that distinction matters.
