After winning the 1993 Heisman Trophy and quarterbacking the Florida State Seminoles football team to a national championship, Ward elected to pursue a professional basketball career. He was picked in the first round, 26th overall, of the 1994 NBA Draft and went on to play 11 seasons, primarily as a point guard with the New York Knicks.
Ward’s No. 12 Florida State basketball jersey was retired last October, joining his No. 17 football jersey. He’s the only athlete in school history to have a number retired in multiple sports.
Bethune-Cookman Wildcats head coach Reggie Theus was picked ninth overall out of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the 1978 NBA Draft and played 13 seasons in the league.
He was a two-time NBA All-Star while playing shooting guard for the Chicago Bulls. His stardom in the Windy City actually predated Michael Jordan’s arrival by four months before ‘His Airness’ would go on to bring six NBA titles to the Bulls.
