Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins comments on NFL future

1 week ago 2

One of the hottest topics at the conclusion of the 2025 season for the Atlanta Falcons is the future of quarterback Kirk Cousins. Once booed on the field after he re-assumed the reins in place of an injured Michael Penix Jr., Cousins seemed to regain some of his former magic over the final four games.

But with the season over and Penix set to complete his recovery from a torn ACL in his left knee, there's a more than reasonable chance that Cousins will be demoted once more. The veteran QB was asked after the game about his NFL future and how the Falcons factor into that.

“Hard to know," Cousins said following the team's 19-17 win over the New Orleans Saints. “I would like to keep playing, but we’ll see how things play out in March or even after that...I would love to be back here. We’ll see how things play out."

Cousins functioned largely in a game manager role from a quarterback perspective during his eight-game run in 2025. He went 5-3 as the starter over that stretch, including a four-game winning streak to end the season.

He completed 61.7% of his passes for 1,721 yards with 10 passing touchdowns and five interceptions over 10 appearances. Cousins also had one rushing touchdown over the same time span.

The 37-year-old's contract carries a non-guaranteed salary of $35 million for 2026. The Falcons would owe him a $10 million roster bonus in March if he were to be retained.

The situation at hand certainly gives the Falcons a lot to think about in terms of Cousins' overall value, and what their plan is regarding Penix in 2026.

Cousins' future will be something to watch over the next few months.
