Lagway spent the last two seasons with Florida, finishing with a 10-9 record as the starter for the Gators. He struggled with injuries during the 2025 preseason, and it impacted his overall play, as he finished the season with 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

He was 6-1 as the starter with 1,915 passing, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a freshman in 2024.

Despite the firing of the head coach who recruited him to Florida – Billy Napier – following the Gators' season-ending win over Florida State on Nov. 29, Lagway indicated he wanted to remain at Florida.

However, he entered the transfer portal on Dec. 15. The decision to enter the portal came two weeks after he met with new head coach Jon Sumrall, after he took the job on Nov. 30. Sumrall denied that he pushed Lagway to transfer on an appearance on Hot Mic Podcast on Outkick.com this week.

"Obviously a talented football player," Sumrall said, "You've seen his good has been really good, I've watched it with my own two eyes. Think the world of him. You know, when I met with DJ I said 'Hey man, this culture is going to be built on toughness and love of football if you fit that great, if you don't, then that's not going to be good.'

"I said let's talk through what this going to look like moving forward. We'd love to have you stay here, if you're comfortable with some ground rules that are laid out. It was his decision to leave. He was not forced out of here by any stretch of the imagination."
