Ex-Broncos QBs coach drawing HC interest; Lions fire ex-Denver assistant

John Morton's return to the Detroit Lions was short-lived.

After serving as a senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022, Morton was hired by Sean Payton to serve as the Denver Broncos' pass game coordinator in 2023. Morton previously coached under Payton with the New Orleans Saints (2015-2016), and he lasted two seasons with the Broncos before getting a promotion.

The Lions poached Morton during the 2025 offseason, hiring him as their offensive coordinator. Despite the offense averaging 28.3 points per game this season (fifth-most in the NFL), Detroit fired Morton on Tuesday.

It remains to be seen if Payton might have room on his staff for a reunion with Morton. Payton was full of praise for the assistant coach when he returned to the Lions last year.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the ex-Broncos assistant front, Klint Kubiak is drawing serious interest from clubs seeking a head coach in 2026. Kubiak, who served as Denver's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022, now serves as the Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator. Four NFL teams -- the New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders and Atlanta Falcons -- are lining up head coach interviews with Kubiak.

Those same four teams also plan to interview Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who is expected to be one of the top head coach candidates this hiring cycle.
