Don't Be Surprised If Tarik Skubal Shows Up With Dodgers

In the latest episode of "The Rich Get Richer," the Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly having chit-chats with the Detroit Tigers.

The Dodgers' goal? Get Tigers ace pitcher Tarik Skubal on the Los Angeles pitching staff by some time in July.

As hard as it might seem right now, with spring training just a few weeks away, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Freidman and Dodgers general manager Brandan Gomes are working hard.

They want the Dodgers to get back to the World Series yet again, just like Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and his players do as well.

But the Dodgers' front office wants to make sure that the team has enough starting pitching on hand. Like, having Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, and Roki Sasaki isn't enough? Not if the Dodgers have anything to say about it.

Reports are circulating that Los Angeles and Detroit have been discussing some type of blockbuster trade that would bring Skubal to the West Coast. No specific players have been mentioned, but one would think that the Dodgers would have to put together a big package of players.

Why is it important to get Skubal now? Let's take a look at Skubal's contract situation, thanks to some intel from a new MLB.com article.

"Whether he’s traded this offseason or not, Skubal will be surrounded by significant intrigue as the 2026 campaign unfolds," according to the MLB.com article. "The left-hander will be chasing a place alongside Hall of Famers Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson as the only pitchers to win three straight Cy Young Awards.

"Another strong season could also position the 29-year-old Skubal to surpass Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s $325 million record for the richest contract ever signed by a pitcher," MLB.com reports.

Bigger than Yamamoto? Where will the Dodgers come up with the money to get Skubal? If that money is not that important, then what players might be headed to the Motor City?

These questions and thoughts are probably running through the Dodgers' front office right now. Imagine Skubal getting the ball every fourth day, coming in and firing heat to the plate on a regular basis.

The Dodgers just might have other teams yelling "Uncle" before even starting the game.

Don't discount Los Angeles from the Skubal talks at all. They have some assets that other teams might want to add to their lineup. Detroit wants to get back into the American League postseason picture. Skubal has helped the Tigers do so under manager A.J. Hinch.

Will Skubal end up buying some clothes along Rodeo Drive in July? We'll just have to wait and see.
