But the latest free agent rumor suggests that they are viewing themselves as potential contenders.
That's because Alex Bregman is reportedly in their sights.
MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported this on Thursday night:
"Sources believe the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt for Bregman, though a Red Sox reunion remains a possibility."

The general expectation this offseason has been that the Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs are in the lead of the running for Bregman.
Toronto and Arizona are both huge surprises in this report.

The Diamondbacks, in particular, aren't always the biggest spenders in free agency. Bregman is one of the top free agent hitters available, and he'd be an incredible statement of intent by Arizona to show they're really trying to go for it.
Bregman is also a potential culture builder. He was regarded as a great leader in his first season with the Red Sox in 2025.
If the Diamondbacks were really able to nab him away from that, and from the other big-market suitors, this would instantly be viewed as a successful offseason for Arizona. It'll be fun to track this and see how it works out.
