Detroit Lions 2026 first round draft pick: Who to root for in Week 18

5 days ago 2

Where will the Detroit Lions pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft in April?

The Lions (8-8) enter Week 18 eliminated from NFL playoff contention and at No. 15 in the draft, according to Tankathon.com, because their strength of schedule is weakest among the league’s three other 8-8 teams not in the playoffs.

If the Lions lose Sunday in Week 18 at the Chicago Bears, they could seemingly pick as high as 12th – that would require the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday to beat the Carolina Panthers (in Tampa), the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday to beat the New Orleans Saints (in Atlanta), and the Dallas Cowboys (who have the lone tie among non-playoff teams) on Sunday to beat the New York Giants (in New Jersey).

The Miami Dolphins, who could also get to 8-9 with a win at New England, have a current strength of schedule of .485 − using the current records of all of their opponents − compared to the Lions' .491. However, those numbers will change slightly with the results from the final week of games, which means if all breaks right for the Lions, they could possibly pick 11th. Maybe?

If the Lions win to finish 9-8 − and avoid a losing season for the first time since going 3-13-1 in 2021, Dan Campbell's first year as coach − they could pick as low as 18th, depending on the results of other games.

NFL draft first round order 2026 entering Week 18

Here is the first-round order of Picks 11-18, via Tankathon.com, with strength of schedule of all 17 opponents − the metric used to break ties between teams with the same record. (Picks 19-32 are controlled by playoff teams.)

  • No. 11: Miami Dolphins, 7-9, .485, at New England.

  • No. 12: Atlanta Falcons (to LA Rams), 7-9, .496, vs. New Orleans.

  • No. 13: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 7-9, .533, vs. Carolina.

  • No. 14: Dallas Cowboys, 7-8-1, .436, at New York Giants.

  • No. 16: Baltimore Ravens, 8-8, .502, at Pittsburgh.

  • No. 17: Minnesota Vikings, 8-8, .517, vs. Green Bay.

  • No. 18: Indianapolis Colts (to New York Jets), 8-8, .537, at Houston.

Carolina, also 8-8 and holding pick No. 19 as the NFC South leader, has a .522 SOS.

Another reason the Lions would benefit from a loss (or a Vikings win against third-string Packers starting quarterback Clayton Tune): The guarantee of a fourth-place schedule among three crossover matchups in 2026.

Currently, the Lions would play the NFC East's fourth-place New York Giants instead of the Washington Commanders and a potentially healthy Jayden Daniels, the NFC West's Arizona Cardinals instead of the Los Angeles Rams and the AFC South's Tennessee Titans instead of the Indianapolis Colts.

The Lions have at least seven draft picks in the 2026 draft in Pittsburgh, April 23-25. They do not have a third-round pick − they traded both to move up to draft Isaac TeSlaa in 2025 − but are in line to receive at least one compensatory choice, currently projected as a fifth-round pick by OverTheCap.com, due to 2025 free agency losses.
