Dan Lanning named finalist for Bear Bryant Award ahead of CFP semis

5 days ago 2

Off the strength of an appearance in the College Football Playoff Semifinals and a 13-1 record thus far, Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has been named as a finalist for the Paul "Bear" Bryant National Coach of the Year Award.

Lanning was named a finalist for the award alongside Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, James Madison’s Bob Chesney, Miami’s Mario Cristobal, Texas A&M’s Mike Elko, Virginia’s Tony Elliott, Vanderbilt’s Clark Lea and Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire.

The award is the most prestigious coaching honor in college football, as it has been presented for 40 years to the coach who embodies “grit, integrity and a winning approach to coaching and life – both on and off the field."

Lanning is one many in the Ducks' program to receive awards this season, as a bevy of his players were named to the All-Big Ten teams and secured other individual honors, another mark of a successful coach.

But the true mark of success is winning — something that the Oregon head man has done consistently since arriving in Eugene in 2022.

To date, he's gone an impressive 48-7 in four seasons with Holiday Bowl (2022), Fiesta Bowl (2023) and Orange Bowl (2025) victories to boot. He'll have a chance to reach the 50-win mark during the 2025 season, but it will take Oregon claiming the first national title in program history to do so.
