Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Hired By NFL Team - But Not By Jerry Jones

FRISCO - Troy Aikman has often talked about the idea of him leaving the network broadcast booth to become the GM of an NFL team.

And of course, Cowboys fans - frustrated by the leadership of team owner Jerry Jones, who acts as his own GM - have long wished that connection could be made at The Star.

But instead, on New Year's Day, it's been revealed that Aikman will have a new role ... albeit a brief one ...

And not in Dallas.

The Miami Dolphins have hired the ESPN NFL analyst and iconic Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman to serve as a consultant to assist in their general manager search, a source has confirmed to me.

Aikman has apparently been working in that role recently as he assists Dolphins owner Stephen Ross in the Dolphins’ search for a new GM to replace the fired Chris Grier.

Aikman, 59, is not himself a candidate for the Miami GM.

The Hall of Famer Aikman is among the most respected voices and minds in sports ... and not just because of his perch as the color man on "Monday Night Football.''

Aikman was the first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft and won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys while playing a key role in locker-room leadership. He's continued to be the glue that in many cases bonds those old friendships, and he is also a prominent figure in charity work in his adopted hometown of Dallas.

He has often clashed with Jerry over the way the Jones family runs the Cowboys - a franchise that Aikman takes deep pride in.

But the conflict makes it even more unlikely that Aikman will ever work here again ... freeing him to do things like work for the Dolphins.
