For the last decade plus, as the curtain has been pulled back, fans have clamored for the Dallas Cowboys to form a divide between ownership and management. Owner Jerry Jones has been the team's GM since he bought the club in 1989, and as such, the 30-year drought on making a conference championship falls at his feet. Any other GM would've been fired three or four times over if he weren't also the ultimate boss, but because Jones controls everything, he's still occupying multiple levels of the org chart.
That hasn't stopped many fans of dreaming of a one-day hire. One name constantly bandied about as a potential person Jones would entrust with the fate of his team has been Hall of Fame QB Troy Aikman. Aikman was of course the field general under center during the first phase of Jones' ownership, winning three Super Bowls with the Cowboys. Aikman's role for the last 23 years has been as a color analyst, but he's now going to help an NFL team find their way back to being competitive.

But it won't be the Cowboys. Instead, Aikman has been hired by the Miami Dolphins to assist in their search for a new GM, per ESPN.
It is not a permanent role, but he will be an adviser throughout the process for the Dolphins' next general manager.
Miami ownership wanted an outside respected perspective from someone who had strong relationships across the league. Aikman brings this after more than three decades as an NFL player and broadcaster.
The Cowboys are set to embark on their offseason journey starting in less than four days. They will have several decisions to make, starting with their coaching staff but presumably they'll be using their internal resources to make those decisions. Meanwhile one of the most respected names in team history will be helping out another organization.
