Commanders' offensive leader reacts to Kliff Kingsbury's departure

Washington Commanders' guard Sam Cosmi was not exactly pleased with the news of Kliff Kingsbury not returning next season.

Appearing with Brian Mitchell and JP Finlay of "BMitch & Finlay" on Tuesday on 106.7 The Fan, Cosmi had learned of the news before going on the air, yet he was audibly cautious talking about Kingsbury not being his offensive coordinator in 2026. "I understand. But at the same time, I'm kinda like, this type of season that you have, normally somebody gets cut, gets the boot. So, whatever the decisions they decided to make up front is up to them."

Cosmi has now played under offensive coordinators Scott Turner (2021-22), Eric Bieniemy (2023) and Kliff Kingsbury (2024-25) in his short NFL career (2021-2025). The former Texas Longhorn was drafted in the second round (51 overall) in 2021 by Washington and has already learned it's a cutthroat business.

"All I can do is just be like, 'Ok, I gotcha, what's next?' Who's coming in? What's the new playbook?"

Having concluded his five NFL seasons, Cosmi is willing to move on quickly and get acclimated to the new offensive coordinator when he is named and arrives. Yet, you could also clearly hear that Sam Cosmi genuinely respected and appreciated Kingsbury.

"Kliff as a person is a phenomenal person," began Cosmi. "Really respect him as who he is. One thing I did appreciate the most, when it came to being able to talk to the players, being able to get our feedback, he took that in, and not a lot of OCs do that. That is something I truly appreciated that he would listen to us. That speaks about his character and who he is."

"It's unfortunate the events that just took place, but for the most part, it is a business at the end of the day. We have to perform, and it is what it is."

Cosmi also expressed that Kingsbury did well with the run game and feels it is important to establish.

"What's crucial for us is to establish an identity, especially in the run game. I think we showed a lot of potential in the run game."
