How the Indianapolis Colts handle the upcoming offseason when it comes to the job statuses of GM Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen is viewed as a "wild card" by one NFL insider.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer and Conor Orr recently discussed what they're hearing about some of the biggest head coaching decisions ahead of Week 18.

Breer mentions that the Colts have come up in conversations over the last few weeks, specifically GM Chris Ballard.
While injuries certainly contributed to the Colts' second-half slide, this is also Ballard's ninth season as GM, and he has little to show for it.
During his tenure, the Colts have no division titles, two playoff appearances, one playoff win, and they haven't been to the postseason since 2020.
Steichen is wrapping up his third season as head coach and has no postseason appearances. However, Breer's "sense" is that if Steichen were let go, he could land another head coaching job "quickly."

In terms of which direction the Colts will go this offseason, here is why Breer is uncertain of what's ahead:
"This one’s a wild card," wrote Breer, "because controlling owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon is new, and doesn’t have a track record in these sorts of matters, which has led to some uneasiness internally as the staff has worked to break a six-game losing streak marked by a season-ending injury to quarterback Daniel Jones."
Other NFL insiders also seem to be unsure of what's ahead for the Colts.
