Clemson’s quarterback room will be smaller heading into the offseason.

Redshirt freshman walk-on quarterback Cade Trotter announced Wednesday that he plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Friday. Trotter joined the Tigers ahead of the 2025 season and spent the year working primarily with the scout team.

In a social media post, Trotter reflected positively on his time at Clemson while explaining his decision to move on.

“The opportunity to be a Clemson Tiger has been an honor,” Trotter wrote. “My time here has grown me as a man and in my dependence on the Lord. My ambition has been to honor this University and this team with my hard work, consistency, perseverance, and loyalty.”

Trotter said the decision came after realizing a change was necessary for his development as a quarterback.

“My calling as a quarterback is to grow, develop, lead, and execute — all with the idea in mind to pursue excellence, to win, and to make myself and the men around me better,” he wrote. “However, the need for movement in order to reach my full potential in football has become necessary, which is why I have chosen to enter the transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining.”

A native of Dallas, Trotter played his high school football at Highland Park High School in Texas. He did not appear in a game for Clemson this season and was not among the quarterbacks to record a snap.

“I am excited for what is ahead and ready to take the right step,” Trotter added.
