Clemson avoids collapse to take down Syracuse in their ACC opener

1 week ago 2

Clemson opened ACC play with a hard-earned 64–61 road win at Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon, showing poise late in a game that swung back and forth for most of the second half.

The Tigers set the tone early by attacking the paint, racing out to a 12–3 lead behind strong interior play from R.J. Godfrey and Carter Welling. Clemson struggled to find rhythm from the perimeter in the opening half, but continued success inside allowed the Tigers to stay in front. Syracuse made a push late in the half, yet Clemson closed strong defensively and carried a narrow 29–28 lead into the locker room.

Physical play remained the theme after halftime. Clemson put together its best stretch midway through the second half, holding the Orange scoreless for more than five minutes while building separation. That defensive stand gave the Tigers breathing room and forced Syracuse to play from behind.

The Orange responded with a late run, cutting into the lead and turning the final minutes into a possession-by-possession battle. With momentum starting to swing, Dillon Hunter delivered when Clemson needed it most, knocking down back-to-back three-pointers and later adding a key layup to steady the Tigers. Godfrey led the way with 14 points, while Hunter finished with 10.

Syracuse had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but the attempt came up short, sealing Clemson’s fourth straight victory.
