Clay, West girls score sizeable nonconference victories

West 59, Coal Grove 27

Behind big efforts from its low post duo of Maddie Lawless and Macey Whisman, as well as a balanced scoring effort overall, the West Senators’ girls basketball program was able to claim an impressive 32-point win over the Coal Grove Hornets’ girls basketball program Monday evening at Portsmouth West High School in West Portsmouth.

Lawless, who has enjoyed a big freshman season, scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half including 11 in a third quarter where the forward hit three three-pointers. Whisman scored 10 of her 16 points in the opening half to boot.

Hailey Carver added in seven of her 10 points in the second half of competition while Brayleigh Pistole posted five of her nine points in the final pair of stanzas to help aid the Lady Senators.

Ally Buckner and Kayla Throckmorton combined for the remaining six points for West.

Coal Grove was led by Jenna Anson’s 14 points.

West (9-1) will play at Wheelersburg on Monday, Jan. 5 in a major SOC III contest for both squads.

Saturday, Dec. 27

Clay 54, Miller 8

In a convincing triumph, the Clay Panthers’ girls basketball program was able to move to 7-2 to begin the 2025-26 season as a balanced scoring effort led Clay past Miller, 54-8, in a nonconference win Saturday evening at Clay High School.

Emma Emnett led the Lady Panthers with 20 points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals, while Ava Demorest added in 12 points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist to boot in the contest.

Maddie Penix and Sophia Craft combined for 14 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and two assists with Penix posting eight points and eight rebounds and Craft notching six points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists, while Mia Lunsford added in seven points and two steals to complete the lines of the main contributors in the contest.

Clay will play at Symmes Valley on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. in Willow Wood.
