Bryce Underwood future trending toward Michigan, Whittingham says

With a coaching change comes uncertainty -- who will be the assistant coaches, which players will stay, which will go, and which will come? For the Wolverines, one of the biggest questions has surrounded quarterback Bryce Underwood, the now-true sophomore who started his entire freshman year.

Underwood was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class and made a shocking flip to Michigan football from LSU. But with his recruiter, former head coach Sherrone Moore, being fired and new head coach Kyle Whittingham taking over after decades at Utah, it stands to reason to wonder if Underwood would be all in on Michigan. However, everything he's shown after Whittingham's hire makes it appear as if he's likely to stay.

Whittingham appeared on Wake Up Barstool with Dave Portnoy on Monday Morning, and he says that he expects an announcement soon, and things appear to be trending in the right direction.

"I think Bryce is in a good place right now, and I think he might be getting an announcement here pretty soon," Whittingham said. "He seems to really enjoy his time here. He's enjoying his time here. He's one of the team leaders. He's a young guy, but he's one of the team leaders, obviously by virtue of the position. He is a guy that we think is going to be a part of what we're doing going forward. You never know until it's a done deal."

Keeping Underwood and wide receiver Andrew Marsh are among the maize and blue's top priorities. There have been some unexpected departures, but given the prominence of Underwood's position, the Wolverines need to ensure that they have clarity sooner than later.

Given that Whittingham expects an announcement soon, along with his positive demeanor here, it does appear as if Underwood returning is close to being a reality. Of course, with new offensive coordinator Jason Beck taking over, it's a spread system in which he could and should thrive in.

Whittingham revealed upon his hiring that the first call he made was to Underwood (player-wise) and that they spoke for 45 minutes. He was the only player directly mentioned in his introductory presser.
