Browns head coach search: Who is making the decision this time?

1 hour ago 2

As the Cleveland Browns continue their head coaching search and interview process, questions remain about who holds the most influence in the room when it comes to guiding these decisions and leading the interviews. The easy answer would be general manager Andrew Berry; however, Browns’ owner Jimmy Haslam has been known to be a prominent voice in these conversations.

The Haslams have played a significant role in shaping many of the team’s decisions throughout their time as owners. They have offered their input on draft picks, coaching hires, and a wide range of other moves. It is hard to know with certainty how involved they are in each decision, but they definitely are not completely hands-off. Many believe that they have pulled back from giving their input as much in recent years and have left major decisions up to Berry and the front office.

With Paul DePodesta departing without anyone taking his role, there may be fewer voices in the room this time around. J.W. Johnson has been highly involved as a part of the ownership group, increasingly over Haslam’s time with the team.

Given the Haslams’ decision to retain Berry as the team’s general manager, it would make the most sense for them to cede the majority of control over this coaching hire to him. Berry has not had the opportunity to hire a head coach yet since he and Kevin Stefanski joined the organization in the same year. The Haslams should allow him the opportunity to select a coach that fits the culture he wants to build in Cleveland.
