Browns GM Andrew Berry does not commit to Shedeur Sanders in 2026

Cleveland Browns General Manager Andrew Berry offered a candid look into the team’s future at the quarterback position, admitting he simply doesn't know who will lead the offense in 2026. “I can’t tell you today if the starter in 2026 is internal or external,” Berry stated, framing the situation with maximum uncertainty.

While external options present a vast spectrum, ranging from 2026 rookies to promising young projects or even veteran players seeking a fresh start, the internal landscape is much more limited. It revolves around the three quarterbacks currently on the books for 2026: Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and Deshaun Watson.

The most likely internal candidate to take the reins is Shedeur Sanders, who concluded the 2025 season as the starter. Despite operating in limited action, his 2025 campaign showed a volatile quarterback who is talented but not ready for the NFL yet.

He logged 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions. Sanders also demonstrated mobility, contributing 169 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, though he did tally two fumbles.

Close behind him is fellow 2025 draftee, Dillon Gabriel, whose 2025 season saw him pass for 937 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions, complimented by 86 rushing yards.

However, the undeniable elephant in the room is Deshaun Watson.

Watson's situation is complex, stemming from a season-ending Achilles injury suffered during the 2024 season and the guaranteed money remaining on his contract. In the seven games he played that year, he recorded 1,148 passing yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, 148 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and five costly fumbles.

Watson was not activated during the entire 2025 season as he continued his prolonged return to football shape. With his status and ability to return to form remaining a significant question mark, Berry's non-committal stance on the starting QB job highlights that the Browns are keeping all options open as they navigate the critical 2026 offseason.
