Bears' Caleb Williams on being on wrong side of thrilling 4th quarters

1 week ago 2

The Chicago Bears and quarterback Caleb Williams have set an NFL record with six fourth-quarter comebacks this season, giving the fanbase and the players a feeling that they're truly never out of any game.

But in Week 17's game against the San Francisco 49ers, even as they had the ball within two yards of the game-winning score, the Bears came up short as Caleb Williams' potential game-winning touchdown pass fell incomplete, seeing Chicago on the opposite side of a thrilling fourth-quarter finish.

Coming off the heels of their improbably comeback win over the Green Bay Packers in an overtime thriller in Week 16, the Bears had plenty of confidence playing from behind against the 49ers only to come up short. After the loss, Williams spoke about the feelings on being on the wrong end of an exciting fourth-quarter ending.

"It's frustrating, obviously. You don't want to lose a game ever," Williams said. "And then, also being in that position and having a shot at the end is all you can ask for in those moments, but we have to do a better job overall. It’s just execution. We made too many mistakes as a team. Whether it's penalties, whether it's alignments, whether it's assignments, things like that. We'll go back, we'll figure it out, and we'll be truth tellers to ourselves. We have a great shot at the end of the season to put ourselves in a good spot, but also to get back on a roll and get back on a run here through the playoffs, that's what you're focused on."

It's a good learning lesson for this Bears roster has been on the right side of plenty of fourth-quarter finishes this season, and it'll be key to see how they bounce back in the regular season finale against the Detroit Lions.
