Baylor Scheierman didn't know he'd end up playing, guarding Wemby for Boston Celtics

When you play for the Boston Celtics under head coach Joe Mazzulla this season, you can go from warming the bench save for some occasional meaningful stints to guarding the toughest cover in the NBA for extended stretches vs. the most difficult opponent Boston has faced yet this season in the space of just two games.

And that is exactly what happened for backup Celtics wing Baylor Scheierman, who found himself thrust into action to help fellow Boston wing Jordan Walsh try to contain San Antonio Spurs superstar forward Victor Wembanyama in the Celtics' 100-95 loss to the Spurs at TD Garden on Saturday (Jan. 10) evening. Scheierman acquitted himself well defensively, and still managed to impact the game in other areas, logging 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals in 26 minutes of floor time, shooting a sizzling 4-of-5 from the field, and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

The wildest part of it all? Scheierman shared that he did not even know he would be playing vs. the Spurs ahead of the game. "I had no idea," he said. "I didn’t know if I was going to play tonight or not -- that’s kind of just how it is."

"My job is to be ready when my number is called and just try to go out there and impact the game in any way I can," added Scheierman, who emphasized that being prepared to play is always the paramount concern.

"Obviously, we talked about the game plan and what we’re trying to do. So, when I was out there, (I was) just trying to execute that to the best of my ability and try to just fly around and just make plays and try to give us some energy."
