Anthony Rendon contract with Angels restructured: What we know

1 week ago 2

When Anthony Rendon signed a seven-year, $245 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels prior to the 2020 season, fans were ecstatic. It didn't pan out the way they'd hoped, though.

Since 2021, Rendon's career has been marred by injuries and underwhelming production.

Finally, the debacle is over. Rendon, 35, has agreed to restructure the final year of his contract, essentially ending his tenure with the Angels.

Rendon was expected to make $38 million in 2026. However, a person with knowledge of the agreement confirmed to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale that the remainder of Rendon's contract will instead be spread out over a few years. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity since terms are not yet public.

Are the Angels and Anthony Rendon officially through with each other?

Not technically. Per ESPN, Rendon will continue to occupy a roster space on the Angels roster through 2026, though he is not expected to play, but rather continue rehabbing from his home in Houston, just as he did in 2025. The Angels will be able to place Rendon on the 60-day injured list, though, thusly freeing up space on their active roster.

ESPN also notes that Rendon will not declare retirement in 2026, but it's unlikely he returns to Major League Baseball at all.

The details of Rendon's restructuring are still not entirely official, but talks between the Angels, Rendon, and Rendon's representatives have reportedly been ongoing since the early parts of the offseason.

Anthony Rendon's Angels tenure

Rendon's biggest issue with the Angels was his availability. He will end up having played in just one-quarter of the Angels' games over the length of his contract, amassing a pitiful 3.9 bWAR in the five seasons he participated in.

Though Rendon did shows flashes of greatness during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, even finishing top-10 in AL MVP voting that year, his tenure with the Angels has been nothing short of disappointing. Across 257 games with the Angels, Rendon slashed .242/.348/.369, good for a 100 OPS+, making him a league-average hitter when healthy.

Rendon has publicly stated that he has become disinterested in baseball, admitting that it is not his highest priority, just a job.
