A former top recruit in Alabama's 2024 class, Mbakwe originally began his career as a cornerback during his true freshman season, racking up 15 tackles and one interception as part of the 2024 campaign. Mbakwe went on to make the switch to wide receiver during the 2025 season however, a move which saw the sophomore make three receptions for 55 yards this past fall, while also seeing time on special teams.
Prior to Alabama, Mbakwe was considered as a five-star recruit in the 2024 cycle, ranked as the nation's No. 12 overall prospect, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Mbakwe also ranked as the No. 2 cornerback nationally out of Clay-Chalkville High School in Alabama.
