Aaron Rodgers Defends Mike Tomlin, Matt LaFleur After Painful Steelers Loss

Aaron Rodgers has talked repeatedly all season about how much he loves Mike Tomlin. Not surprisingly, he was quick to defend the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers head coach following Monday night’s embarrassing 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans.

He also defended his former head coach Matt LaFleur, who’s been heavily criticized after the Green Bay Packers blew a 21-3 lead to the Chicago Bears on Saturday night.

“This league has changed a lot in my 21 years. When you hear conversations about the Mike Tomlins of the world, Matt LaFleurs of the world…When I first got in the league, there wouldn’t be conversations about whether those guys were on the hot seat,” Rodgers lamented during his postgame press conference, which he later stormed out of.

Rodgers blames the new sports media landscape, hot take culture and general impatience for creating a negative atmosphere around coaches whenever their team loses a big game or falls short of expectations.

“For either of those two guys to be on the hot seat is really apropos of where we’re at as a society and a league,” Rodgers continued. “Obviously, Matt’s done a lot of great things in Green Bay and we had a lot of success. Mike T. has had more success than damn near anybody in the league for the last 19, 20 years.”

Rodgers played for LaFleur for four seasons with the Packers, winning two NFL MVP awards and enjoying three straight 13-win seasons. Meanwhile, Tomlin has never had a losing season and recently notched his 200th career win.

“When you have the right guy, and the culture is right, you don’t think about making a change,” Rodgers added. “But, there’s a lot of pressure that comes from the outside, and obviously that sways decisions from time to time. But, not how I would do things and not how the league used to be.”

For all of Tomlin’s regular-season success, he’s gone nine straight seasons without winning a playoff game, which may prompt a change this offseason. Similarly, LaFleur’s teams have also underperformed in the postseason, which may cost him his job.

Time will tell if their teams keep them around or decide to move on this offseason, but at least we know where Rodgers stands.
