49ers superstar fell just short of incredible bit of NFL history

Christian McCaffrey's remarkable 2025 season won't end with the San Francisco 49ers star making NFL history.

McCaffrey in Week 18 finished with six catches for 34 yards, giving him 924 receiving yards for the year, leaving him just 76 yards short of his second season with 1,000-plus rushing yards and 1,000-plus receiving yards. He is one of only three players in NFL history to accomplish the feat once, along with former 49ers running back Roger Craig, and Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk.

No player has hit the 1,000-1,000 mark twice in a career, and it looked for a large swath of the year like McCaffrey would get there. However, his production in the passing game waned dramatically over the final seven games.

In his first 10 contests McCaffrey had 69 catches for 692 yards on 90 targets. Over his final seven games he had only 33 receptions for 232 yards on 39 targets, including 34 yards on six catches against a very good Seattle defense in the season finale.

If the 49ers are going to make any noise in the postseason that lack of usage for McCaffrey in the passing game may wind up coming in handy. Any fresher version of McCaffrey they can get in the playoffs is going to give them a better chance to swing an upset, and they'll need three of those to make it back to the Super Bowl.
