49ers lost $95 million to injury absences in 2025

The impact of the San Francisco 49ers injury problems is hard to quantify after multiple stars missed all or most of the season.

It's easy to overlook those injuries because of the team's 12-5 record and a return to the postseason. However, Over the Cap quantified the injury issues for all 32 teams by adding up how much salary cap space each club had on injured lists this season. Unsurprisingly, the 49ers topped the list with more than $95 million lost to players spending time on IR, PUP, NFI and the various suspended lists.

Here's the explanation of their process:

Reserve lists count for players on IR, PUP, NFI, SUS, etc…They do not count for players who were simply inactive. The amount of game weeks they were on reserve are used to calculate their adjusted reserve salary for the season.

San Francisco leads the league in dollars and percentage of the average per year value of their contracts at 25.74 percent.

The next highest amount of APY lost belonged to the Arizona Cardinals at $78,944,962 and 24.98 percent. The Cleveland Browns were the only other team with more than $70 million lost at $75,083,970 and 21.65 percent.

It's not a surprise the 49ers were this high in such a category. They lost defensive end Nick Bosa ($34 million APY) in Week 3, and then linebacker Fred Warner ($21 million APY) in Week 6. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk ($30 million) also never played.

What's incredible is the 49ers reached these numbers and it didn't account for Brock Purdy ($53 million) or George Kittle's ($19.1 million APY) absences because neither player went on IR despite missing a combined 14 games.
