'Traitor, Terrorist, Ozempic': Jon Rahm details Ryder Cup abuse at Bethpage Black

4 days ago 2

It seems everywhere a member of the European Ryder Cup team goes, they are still getting asked about the fan abuse at Bethpage Black. Even though we've turned the page to 2026, it remains the topic that won't die.

No player has gone into specific detail quite like Jon Rahm did during an appearance on GOLF's Subpar podcast that went live Wednesday, though. Other players just alluded to the fact some heinous things were being said, but the two-time major winner came out and said exactly what he heard that week. And it was, colorful, we'll say.

"With my group, so with me, Tyrrell [Hatton], Sepp [Straka], all three of us, rather overweight," Rahm explained. "Two of them with a very far back hairline, and two of us being in LIV, all I heard was 'traitor', 'terrorist', 'fat', 'Ozempic', a lot. And then, uh, Turkey and hairline appointment things."

If you're scratching your head on the "Turkey" thing, the country has become a prime destination for those in need of hair transplants. Creative stuff.

Rahm, who you would think would feed off of that stuff, said he did his best to block it out.

"You almost have to make a choice at that point," he said. "You either give it back to them [the fans], or you don't, and you know what kind of person you are. Clearly, Rory [McIlroy] and Shane [Lowry] fed off of that and did great, I know if I start having the back and forth banter with the crowd, it's going to take away from golf. The best I could do was just stay quiet and act like it wasn't there. That was the best way I could handle it, because it was rough."

Rahm's method led him to a 3-2-0 record on the week, including 2-0-0 in foursomes. When asked if it was the toughest golf environment he'd ever been in, Rahm nodded his head in agreement.
